Witches with a hat

The “Witches with a Hat” are typical sweet treats from some places, often recognized during the Halloween period or theme parties. They could be understood as decorated cupcakes or cookies that resemble little witches with hats. Here I propose a version of cookies with a hat, transformed into sweets that would look good at a themed party.

Ingredients for the cookies:

  • 300g of flour
  • 150g of sugar
  • 150g of butter
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract
  • A pinch of salt

Ingredients for the decoration:

  • Dark chocolate
  • Colored sprinkles or sugar decorations
  • Colored sugar icing

Preparation

  1. Start by mixing the vanilla extract and the egg in a large bowl.
  2. Add room temperature butter and sugar, mix until you get a homogeneous mixture.
  3. Incorporate the flour and pinch of salt, work the dough until it becomes smooth.
  4. Let the dough rest in the fridge for about 30 minutes.
  5. Preheat the oven to 180 degrees C.
  6. Roll out the dough with a rolling pin to a thickness of about 0.5 cm.
  7. Use a cookie cutter to create circles that will be the bases of your “hats.”
  8. Place the cookies on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and bake for 10-12 minutes until slightly golden.
  9. Let cool completely.

To create the hat:

  1. Melt the dark chocolate in a double boiler or microwave, being careful not to burn it.
  2. Once the cookies have cooled, use the melted chocolate to “glue” conical cookies (like barquillos or empty cream puffs) in the center of each circular cookie, creating the witch’s hat.
  3. Decorate the brim of the hat and the base of the cone with colored icing and add colored sprinkles or sugar decorations to embellish.

These treats can be creatively adapted with various kinds of decorations, such as sugar spiders or small licorice sticks that simulate the witches’ shoes. The colors and decorations can vary according to preferences or the theme of the party.
