Two-tone heart cookies

The two-tone heart cookies are perfect for a sweet break or as a heartfelt homemade gift. Here is the recipe to prepare them in a home style.

Ingredients

  • 250 g of type 00 flour
  • 125 g of cold butter, cubed
  • 125 g of powdered sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • A pinch of salt
  • 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract
  • 2 tablespoons of cocoa powder

Preparation

  1. In the bowl of a kitchen mixer, place the flour, cold butter, powdered sugar, egg, salt, and vanilla extract. Operate the mixer until the dough begins to form large crumbs, then quickly finish kneading by hand. If the dough is too dry, add a tablespoon of cold water.

  2. Divide the dough into two equal parts. Into one half, incorporate the cocoa powder, kneading until the color is uniform. Wrap the two balls of dough separately in cling film and let them rest in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes.

  3. Roll out both doughs on a sheet of parchment paper with a rolling pin, trying to obtain two rectangles of the same size and about 5mm thick.

  4. Place the cocoa dough rectangle on top of the vanilla one, making sure to align the edges as much as possible. Press lightly to adhere the two layers. Use a sharp knife or a pastry wheel to cut the dough into two long strips, then roll them up on themselves to form a two-tone roll. Wrap the roll in cling film and put it back in the fridge for 15 minutes.

  5. Preheat the oven to 180 °C.

  6. Remove the film and cut the roll into slices about 5mm thick. Use a heart-shaped cutter to shape the cookies.

  7. Arrange the cookies on a baking tray lined with parchment paper, leaving a little space between each one.

  8. Bake the cookies for about 12-15 minutes, or until they are lightly golden at the edges.

  9. Remove the cookies from the oven and let them cool on a wire rack.
