Pasta with Tuna, Onions, and Apples

Pasta with tuna, onions, and apples is an unusual but interesting dish thanks to the mix of sweet and savory flavors. Here’s how to proceed with the preparation of this dish.

Ingredients

  • 320 grams of pasta (penne, farfalle, or spaghetti are fine)
  • 1 green apple (for example, Granny Smith), peeled and cut into cubes
  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced
  • 160 grams of canned tuna, drained
  • Extra virgin olive oil as needed
  • Salt and pepper as needed
  • A pinch of oregano or thyme (optional)
  • Juice of a lemon as needed (optional)
  • Chopped fresh parsley for garnish (optional)

Preparation

  1. Bring a pot of salted water to a boil for the pasta. Once boiling, cook the pasta according to the package instructions. Drain it al dente, saving a bit of the cooking water.

  2. Meanwhile, in a large pan, heat a drizzle of extra virgin olive oil and sauté the onion over medium-low heat until it becomes translucent. Add a pinch of salt to help the onions release their juices and soften.

  3. Add the apple cubes to the pan and cook for a few minutes until they start to caramelize slightly. If you like, you can sprinkle the apples with some lemon juice to prevent browning and to add a bit of acidity.

  4. Incorporate the drained tuna into the pan with the onions and apples, breaking it up slightly with a fork if it’s in too large pieces. Mix gently and let the flavors combine for a couple of minutes. Adjust the seasoning with salt and pepper, and if you wish, add a pinch of oregano or thyme.

  5. Add the drained pasta to the sauce in the pan. If the mixture is too dry, add a little cooking water to blend better and create a light cream. Mix well to distribute the sauce evenly.

  6. Serve the pasta hot, garnished with chopped fresh parsley if desired.

This recipe might surprise you with the combination of apples and onions with the tuna, but the contrast between the sweetness of the apples and the savory of the tuna can offer a pleasant taste experience. Enjoy your meal!
