Tramezzini

Tramezzini are a typical Italian preparation, simple yet delicious, perfect for a light lunch, picnic, or buffet. Here is a basic recipe for tramezzini that you can then vary according to your tastes.

Ingredients

  • Sandwich bread for tramezzini (quantity depends on how many you want to make)
  • Mayonnaise
  • Cooked ham
  • Mozzarella

Preparation

  1. Take two slices of sandwich bread for tramezzini. Spread a thin layer of mayonnaise on the inner side of each slice.
  2. Place a slice of cooked ham on one of the slices.
  3. Slice the mozzarella and distribute it over the ham.
  4. Close the tramezzino with the other slice of bread, with the mayonnaise side facing inwards.
  5. For a neater and more traditional appearance, you can trim the crusty edges of the bread, if present, and cut the tramezzino diagonally to create two triangles.
  6. If you want, you can prepare the tramezzini a few hours before serving, wrap them in cling film, and store them in the fridge; this allows the flavors to blend together better.

You can vary the filling with other ingredients such as salmon and butter, tuna and tomato, or vegetarian creations with avocado, tomatoes, cucumbers, or whatever you like. The mayonnaise can also be replaced with other sauces or dressings such as pesto, hummus, or cream cheese.

Curiosity

Tramezzini, also known as “tramezzi” or “tramezzi sandwiches”, originated in Turin in the early twentieth century. Their characteristic triangular shape is designed for easy consumption without the use of utensils and they are a staple of the Italian aperitivo.
