Tacos

Tacos are a classic of Mexican cuisine consisting of small tortillas stuffed with various ingredients. We are making the most traditional version of tacos with meat, but remember that they can be customized according to personal tastes. Here’s the basic recipe:

Ingredients

  • 300 grams of ground beef or chopped (chicken or pork can also be used)
  • 8 corn or flour tortillas
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves of garlic, minced
  • 1 fresh chili or chili powder (depending on your taste for spice)
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • Vegetable oil for frying
  • Toppings of choice: chopped cilantro, raw diced onion, lime wedges, tomato sauce or spicy sauce, cooked beans, grated cheese, avocado or guacamole, sour cream

Preparation

  1. Heat a drizzle of oil in a large skillet and sauté the chopped onion until it becomes translucent. Add the garlic and chili, and cook for a minute.
  2. Add the ground meat to the skillet and cook over medium-high heat, breaking it up with a wooden spoon, until it’s no longer pink.
  3. Season the meat with cumin, salt, and pepper and continue to cook for a few minutes, until the meat is well cooked and flavored.
  4. Warm the tortillas in another pan or in the microwave, wrapped in a damp cloth, until they become soft and warm.
  5. Assemble the tacos by spreading the meat on the tortillas and adding the chosen toppings.
  6. Serve immediately with lime wedges on the side.

For an Italian twist, you could add a bit of dried oregano or chopped fresh basil to the meat while cooking, or use freshly grated mozzarella cheese.
