Sweet puff pastry mummies

Sweet puff pastry mummies are delightful preparations ideal for festivities like Halloween, but fun and tasty at any time of the year. Here’s what you need and how to prepare them.

Ingredients

  • 1 roll of puff pastry
  • Nutella or a chocolate and hazelnut spread of your preference
  • Toothpicks or small pieces of chocolate (for the eyes)
  • Powdered sugar (optional, for decoration)

Preparation

  1. Preheat the oven to 180 °C (350 °F).
  2. Roll out the puff pastry and cut it into strips about 1 cm wide.
  3. Spread each strip lightly with Nutella.
  4. Roll the pastry around itself from one end, trying to leave some gaps to simulate the wraps of a mummy. It’s not necessary to be too precise; imperfection adds to the charm!
  5. Place the mummies on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  6. Bake for about 12-15 minutes or until the pastry is golden and crisp.
  7. Remove from the oven and let cool slightly.
  8. Use toothpicks or chocolate pieces to make the eyes of the mummies, inserting them into the spaces you left.
  9. If desired, dust with powdered sugar before serving.

Curiosity

Puff pastry was already known and used in Italy during the Renaissance, but it became famous in France with the name “pâte feuilletée”. Moreover, Nutella is an Italian product born after World War II, created to compensate for the lack of cocoa by adding abundant hazelnuts from the regions of Northern Italy.

You can have fun varying the recipe by using, for example, a pistachio cream instead of Nutella or adding chopped dried fruit for a crunchy touch. Have fun and enjoy your meal!
