Stuffed Mozzarella Roll

The stuffed mozzarella roll is a delicious and tempting dish, perfect for appetizers or cold dishes on special occasions. Here is the recipe for preparing an appetizing mozzarella roll stuffed with an Italian twist.

Ingredients

  • 1 large buffalo mozzarella or 2 medium
  • 150 g of thin slices of Parma ham
  • 100 g of washed and dried arugula
  • 50 g of sundried tomatoes in oil
  • Dried oregano to taste
  • Extra virgin olive oil to taste
  • Salt to taste
  • Pepper to taste

Preparation

  1. Begin by gently opening the buffalo mozzarella: make a spiral cut starting from the top, as if you were peeling an apple, keeping the mozzarella connected by a thin layer.

  2. Lay out the now opened mozzarella on a sheet of cling film. Try to obtain as regular a rectangle as possible.

  3. Distribute slices of Parma ham over the mozzarella, creating an even layer.

  4. Add the arugula on top of the Parma ham, and sprinkle the sundried tomatoes cut into strips, distributing them evenly.

  5. Sprinkle everything with a pinch of salt, pepper, oregano, and a drizzle of extra virgin olive oil.

  6. Starting from a long side of the rectangle, roll up the mozzarella using the cling film, forming a tight roll.

  7. Close the roll tightly with the cling film, shaping the roll and making sure that it is sealed.

  8. Place the roll in the refrigerator for at least 2 hours before serving, so that it firms up and is easier to cut.

  9. When ready to serve, remove the cling film and cut the roll into slices about 2 cm thick.

  10. Arrange the slices of the stuffed roll on a serving dish and, if you wish, garnish with a drizzle of oil and arugula leaves.

Curiosity

The mozzarella roll can also be stuffed with other combinations, such as smoked salmon and cream cheese, grilled vegetables, or pesto and pine nuts. The idea of being able to open the mozzarella and stuff it is very similar to the technique used for the preparation of the “reversed” caprese, in which the mozzarella is stuffed with tomato and basil, creating a surprise in this typically Italian dish.
