Stuffed Mozzarella
17/11/2023Stuffed mozzarella is a delicious and versatile dish that can be personalised according to taste and desires. Here is a basic recipe for preparing stuffed mozzarella.
Ingredients
- 4 buffalo mozzarellas (about 100-125 gr each)
- 10-12 cherry tomatoes
- A bunch of fresh basil
- 100 gr of thinly sliced cured ham (optional)
- Pitted black olives (to taste)
- Salted capers (to taste)
- Extra virgin olive oil
- Salt and pepper q.b.
Preparation
-
Start by preparing all the ingredients. Wash the cherry tomatoes and cut them in half or quarters, according to your preference. Rinse the capers under running water to remove excess salt and let them drain. Tear the basil with your hands to maintain its aroma.
-
Make a cross-shaped incision on the top of each mozzarella. Be careful not to cut all the way through; the incision should be deep enough to stuff the mozzarella without it breaking completely.
-
At this point, stuff the mozzarellas. You can insert some cherry tomatoes, a few basil leaves, olives, and capers according to your taste. If you decide to use ham, also add some strips inside.
-
Season the filling with a drizzle of extra virgin olive oil, a touch of salt, and a sprinkling of pepper.
-
Gently close up the mozzarellas and arrange them on a serving dish.
-
If you wish, finish with a final drizzle of oil, a handful of fresh basil, and additional pieces of cherry tomato and olives for decoration.
Curiosity
Buffalo mozzarella is a traditional Italian cheese, particularly from Campania, and it has a Protected Designation of Origin (PDO). It is appreciated for its soft texture and delicate flavour, which pairs perfectly with simple ingredients like tomato and basil, creating the classic trio that recalls the colours of the Italian flag.
This is a very simple and traditional version, but the beauty of this dish lies in its versatility. You can vary the filling using different herbs, other vegetables, cold cuts or even a sprinkling of pesto or a touch of truffle if you want to add an extra touch of elegance to the preparation.
