Stuffed Apple Cutlets

Stuffed apple cutlets are a sweet dish that can be served as a unique dessert or a delicious snack. This is not a classic Italian dish, but here is an Italian take on how to prepare this recipe.

Ingredients

  • 4 large apples (such as Fuji or Golden)
  • 150 g of ricotta
  • 30 g of brown sugar
  • 1 pinch of cinnamon
  • 50 g of dry biscuits (like Digestive)
  • 1 egg (for breading)
  • 100 g of flour
  • 100 g of breadcrumbs
  • Oil for frying

Preparation:

  1. Wash the apples and dry them. Remove the core using an apple corer, taking care to not break the appleā€™s skin.

  2. In a bowl, mix the ricotta with the brown sugar and a pinch of cinnamon. Crumble the dry biscuits and add them to the ricotta to give the filling a crunchy texture.

  3. Fill the hollowed-out center of the apples with the ricotta and biscuit mixture.

  4. In three separate plates, place the flour, beat the egg, and pour the breadcrumbs. Dip the apples first in the flour, then in the beaten egg, and finally in the breadcrumbs, making sure to cover them evenly.

  5. Heat plenty of oil in a frying pan and fry the stuffed apples until they are golden brown on all sides. This step might take about 5 minutes per side, but it greatly depends on the size of the apples.

  6. Once golden, remove the apple cutlets from the oil and lay them on paper towels to remove excess oil.

  7. Serve hot, perhaps with a sprinkle of powdered sugar, a drizzle of honey, or some vanilla ice cream.

Trivia

Apples are one of the most versatile ingredients in sweet cuisine, used both in simple preparations like apple pies and more elaborate ones like strudels. The apple, with its taste that pairs well with both sweet and savory ingredients, allows for creating surprising combinations, as in this case with ricotta.
