Speck and Apple Skewers
17/11/2023Speck and apple skewers are a tasty and easy-to-prepare appetizer. Here is how to make them:
Ingredients
- 200 g of sliced speck
- 2 apples (preferably a variety that holds shape when cooked, such as Granny Smith)
- Juice of one lemon
- Extra virgin olive oil
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Toothpicks or wooden skewers
Preparation
-
Start by washing the apples, then cut them into wedges, removing the core. To prevent them from browning, you might soak the apple wedges in lemon juice.
-
Cut the speck slices into strips as long and wide as the apple wedges.
-
Wrap each apple wedge with a strip of speck, then thread them onto a toothpick or a wooden skewer.
-
Heat a non-stick pan with a drizzle of extra virgin olive oil. When the oil is hot, lay the skewers in and cook for a few minutes on each side, until the speck becomes crisp and the apples are slightly golden.
-
Adjust the seasoning with salt and pepper to taste.
-
Serve the skewers hot, as an appetizer or starter.
Curiosity
The pairing of speck and apples is typical of South Tyrolean cuisine. The sweetness and acidity of the apple balance perfectly with the intense, smoky flavor of speck. Moreover, you can personalize the skewers by adding a touch of blue cheese between the apple and speck for an additional contrast of flavors.
