Spaghetti in pastry crust

Spaghetti in pastry crust is a spectacular and tasty dish, ideal for surprising guests with something unexpected. Here is the recipe:

Ingredients

  • 400 g of spaghetti
  • 1 liter of tomato sauce (homemade is better)
  • Basil to taste
  • 2 cloves of garlic
  • 150 g of grated Parmesan cheese
  • 200 g of mozzarella (buffalo mozzarella is better and well-drained)
  • 100 g of diced cooked ham
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Extra virgin olive oil
  • 1 roll of round puff pastry (or rectangular if you prefer)
  • 1 egg (for brushing)

Preparation

  1. Preheat the oven to 180 °C.
  2. Cook the spaghetti in plenty of salted water until al dente. Drain them and let them cool down slightly.
  3. In the meantime, prepare a simple tomato sauce by sautéing the garlic cloves in oil. Remove them when golden and add the tomato sauce. Let it cook until it has slightly thickened. Season with salt and pepper and add some basil leaves.
  4. In a large bowl, mix the spaghetti with the tomato sauce, add the Parmesan, diced cooked ham, and diced mozzarella. Mix well to distribute the ingredients evenly.
  5. Roll out the puff pastry and place the spaghetti mixture in the center.
  6. Close the pastry around the spaghetti, sealing the edges well to form a crust.
  7. Brush the crust’s surface with a beaten egg to achieve a uniform browning during baking.
  8. Bake for about 20-30 minutes or until the puff pastry is golden brown and crispy.
  9. Take out of the oven and let it rest for a few minutes before serving.
