Sicilian Style Potatoes

Sicilian style potatoes are a tasty and simple side dish to prepare, with a Mediterranean touch given by the presence of flavors like oregano and tomato. Here is the traditional recipe with a small Italian twist in case you want to try something new.

Ingredients

  • 1 kg of potatoes
  • 2-3 ripe tomatoes or a handful of cherry tomatoes
  • 2 cloves of garlic
  • Dried oregano to taste
  • Extra virgin olive oil to taste
  • Salt to taste
  • Pepper to taste
  • (Optional) black olives or capers for an extra Mediterranean touch
  • (Optional) a handful of breadcrumbs for a golden crust

Preparation

  1. Wash the potatoes well, peel them and cut them into medium-sized pieces.
  2. Peel the garlic cloves and slice them into thin slivers.
  3. In a baking dish, arrange the potatoes with the garlic, seasoning with salt and pepper.
  4. Cut the tomatoes into rough pieces and distribute them over the potatoes, or if using cherry tomatoes, you can halve them and place them among the potatoes.
  5. Sprinkle everything generously with oregano and drizzle with a generous amount of extra virgin olive oil.
  6. If desired, also add black olives or capers to further enrich the flavor of the dish.
  7. (Optional) For a crunchy touch, sprinkle the potatoes with breadcrumbs before baking.
  8. Bake in a preheated oven at 180°C (356°F) for about 40 minutes or until the potatoes are golden and soft.

During baking, stir occasionally to ensure the potatoes brown evenly. For a heartier variant, you can also add pieces of sausage among the potatoes before baking.
