Prawns in Spicy Sauce

Prawns in spicy sauce are a tasty dish that combines the sweetness of prawns with the liveliness of chili pepper. Here is a version with an Italian twist:

Ingredients

  • 400g of prawns, shelled and cleaned
  • 2 tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil
  • 3 garlic cloves, finely chopped
  • 1 fresh red chili pepper, chopped (or chili powder to taste)
  • 200ml of tomato puree
  • Salt, to taste
  • Black pepper, to taste
  • Chopped fresh parsley, for garnish

Preparation

  1. Heat the extra virgin olive oil in a large frying pan over medium-high heat.
  2. Add the chopped garlic and chili, frying them for a few minutes until they are aromatic but not burnt.
  3. Place the prawns in the pan and briefly sauté them on both sides (about 1-2 minutes per side), until they turn a bright pink color.
  4. Pour the tomato puree into the pan, mix well to integrate the prawns with the sauce.
  5. Lower the heat and let everything cook for about 5-10 minutes until the sauce slightly thickens.
  6. Taste and adjust the seasoning with salt and pepper according to your preference.
  7. Remove from the heat, plate the prawns, and garnish with chopped fresh parsley.

Serve the prawns in spicy sauce with crispy bread or as a one-dish meal with a side of rice for a more substantial dish.

Curiosity

The chili pepper, in addition to providing spiciness to the dish, has beneficial health properties, such as the ability to stimulate the metabolism. Moreover, the pairing with seafood is widely appreciated in Mediterranean cuisine for the contrast of flavors it can offer.
