Seitan with Pepper
17/11/2023Seitan with pepper is a vegan dish that offers a protein-rich alternative to meat. Here’s how to prepare it:
Ingredients
- 400 g of seitan in slices or cubes
- 1 large onion, thinly sliced
- 2 cloves of garlic, finely chopped
- 1 teaspoon of whole black peppercorns or 1/2 teaspoon of ground black pepper
- Salt to taste
- Whole wheat flour or other flour of choice for dredging
- 2 tablespoons of soy sauce
- 200 ml of vegetable broth
- Extra virgin olive oil or other vegetable oil
- Chopped fresh parsley for garnish
- A pinch of chili flakes (optional)
Preparation
-
Cut the seitan into slices or cubes if it is not already pre-cut.
-
On a plate, mix some flour with salt and roughly crushed peppercorns (or ground pepper).
-
Dredge the seitan slices/cubes in the seasoned flour until lightly covered.
-
In a pan, heat the oil and sauté the onion until it becomes translucent.
-
Add the garlic (and chili flakes if using) and briefly brown it.
-
Place the floured seitan in the pan and brown it until golden on all sides.
-
Deglaze with soy sauce and let the alcohol evaporate for a few minutes.
-
Add the vegetable broth and cook over medium-low heat until the sauce reduces and thickens, forming a gravy.
-
Adjust the salt if necessary.
-
Serve the seitan with pepper hot, sprinkled with chopped fresh parsley.
Seitan with pepper can be accompanied by a side of stewed vegetables or a portion of whole grains such as basmati rice or quinoa. Enjoy your meal!
