Seitan Burger

The seitan burger is an excellent vegetarian alternative to the classic meat hamburger. Here is the recipe for making tasty seitan burgers with an Italian twist.

Ingredients

  • 250 g of seitan
  • 1 tablespoon of soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon of extra virgin olive oil
  • 1 clove of garlic
  • 1 teaspoon of smoked paprika
  • 1 teaspoon of dried oregano
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Breadcrumbs (optional, to add crunchiness)
  • Oil for cooking

Preparation

  1. Start by finely chopping the seitan using a food processor or by mincing it with a knife until it reaches a consistency similar to ground meat.

  2. Transfer the chopped seitan into a bowl and add the soy sauce, olive oil, minced garlic, paprika, oregano, salt, and pepper. If you want a firmer and crunchier mixture, you can add breadcrumbs as desired.

  3. Mix all the ingredients well until the mixture is homogenous and can be easily shaped.

  4. Divide the mixture into equal portions (usually 4 parts from this amount) and shape each portion into round, flattened forms, similar to hamburgers.

  5. Heat a little oil in a non-stick pan and, when it’s hot, cook your seitan burgers for about 4-5 minutes per side, until they’ve developed a nice golden brown and crunchy crust.

  6. Once cooked, serve them hot inside toasted burger buns, with your favorite sauces and toppings of choice, such as lettuce, tomato, onion, pickles, slices of avocado, or vegan cheese.

Curiosity

Seitan, also known as “wheat meat,” is a traditional food in Chinese and Japanese cuisine and is made by kneading wheat flour dough with water, thus eliminating the starch and leaving only the gluten, which is the protein part of the wheat.
