Tuna Stuffed Pastries

The tuna stuffed pastries are a simple and delicious dish. Here is the recipe to prepare them:

Ingredients

  • 1 roll of shortcrust pastry or puff pastry
  • 200 g of canned tuna, drained
  • 1 egg (for brushing the pastry)
  • 1 tablespoon of capers (optional)
  • 2 tablespoons of black or green olives, pitted and chopped (optional)
  • A few leaves of fresh basil (optional)
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Preparation

  1. Preheat the oven to 200 °C (390 °F).
  2. Gently roll out the shortcrust or puff pastry on a lightly floured surface, keeping the baking paper underneath.
  3. In a bowl, mix the drained tuna with the capers, chopped olives, and, if you like, some torn basil leaves. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  4. Cut the pastry into squares or rectangles of equal size. In the center of each piece of pastry, place a teaspoon of the tuna mixture, being careful not to overfill to prevent it from leaking out during cooking.
  5. Fold each piece of pastry over itself, sealing the edges by pressing with your fingers or with the tines of a fork, to create small pastries.
  6. Brush each pastry with the beaten egg, to get a nice golden color during baking.
  7. Arrange the pastries on a baking sheet lined with baking paper and bake in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes, or until the pastry is golden and crispy.
  8. Remove the pastries from the oven and let them cool on a wire rack before serving.

Curiosity

Shortcrust pastry is the base of many pies and savory cakes, but with this same preparation, you can also experiment with other fillings, such as mozzarella and tomato for a Caprese taste, or spinach and ricotta for a vegetarian version. Additionally, the tuna stuffed pastry can become an excellent snack for an aperitif or a tasty appetizer.
