Shrimp Cocktail

I can give you a recipe for an elegant appetizer that combines shrimp with a preparation typically associated with cocktails: the shrimp cocktail. This dish is a classic appetizer that is often served on special occasions.

Ingredients

  • 12 fresh shrimp (or prawns if you prefer)
  • 150 g of mayonnaise
  • 2 tablespoons of ketchup
  • 1 teaspoon of brandy or cognac (optional)
  • A few drops of Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon of fresh lemon juice
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Iceberg lettuce or other greens for garnish
  • Avocado (optional, for a creamy touch)
  • Lemon for garnish

Preparation

  1. Clean the shrimp by removing the shell and the intestine, leaving the tail attached for a more elegant presentation.
  2. In a pot with plenty of salted water, bring to a boil and then cook the shrimp for about 3-4 minutes, or until they become pink and opaque. Drain them and place them in a bowl with water and ice to stop the cooking.
  3. Prepare the cocktail sauce by mixing the mayonnaise with the ketchup, a bit of lemon juice, Worcestershire sauce, brandy or cognac if using, salt, and pepper to taste.
  4. In cocktail cups or on individual plates, arrange a bed of chopped lettuce or other greens.
  5. If you have chosen to use avocado, dice it and place it on top of the lettuce.
  6. Place the shrimp on top of the lettuce and avocado base.
  7. Drizzle the cocktail sauce over the shrimp so that it is well distributed.
  8. Garnish with lemon slices and serve immediately.

Did you know?

The shrimp cocktail was a dish that was very popular in the ’60s and ’70s, especially in refined restaurants and gala dinners. The preparation has remained fairly unchanged over time, and it is still appreciated today for its delicate flavor and elegant presentation.
