Tuna and Onion Tart

The tuna and onion tart is a practical and tasty dish, perfect for a quick meal or a buffet. Here is the recipe:

Ingredients

  • 1 roll of puff pastry or ready-made brisée dough
  • 250 g of canned tuna, drained
  • 2 medium onions
  • 3 eggs
  • 200 ml of cream (or milk, for a lighter version)
  • 100 g of grated cheese (parmesan, pecorino or others according to taste)
  • Extra virgin olive oil
  • Salt and pepper
  • A pinch of oregano (optional)

Preparation

  1. Preheat the oven to 180 °C.
  2. Thinly slice the onions and gently fry them in a pan with a drizzle of oil until they become translucent and soft. Be careful not to burn them, otherwise they will become bitter.
  3. Drain the tuna well from the can and shred it with a fork.
  4. In a bowl, beat the eggs and mix with the cream, add the grated cheese, a pinch of salt and pepper, and if you like, a pinch of oregano for more flavor.
  5. Add the shredded tuna and fried onions to the bowl.
  6. Roll out the pastry and place it in a baking tray previously lined with parchment paper. Prick it with a fork to prevent it from puffing during baking.
  7. Pour the egg, tuna, and onion mixture over the pastry base and level with a spoon.
  8. Fold the edges of the pastry inward to create a border.
  9. Bake the tart for about 25-30 minutes or until the surface is golden brown and slightly puffed.
  10. Let the tart cool slightly before serving.

Curiosity

This savory tart is a perfect solution for using up leftover tuna and can be enriched with ingredients such as olives, capers, or sun-dried tomatoes for a more Mediterranean taste. Furthermore, if you have fresh herbs like parsley or basil at your disposal, adding them chopped to the filling will give a unique scent and freshness.
