Sausage Meatballs

Sausage meatballs are a tasty and fairly simple dish to make. Here’s how they’re prepared.

Ingredients

  • 500 grams of sausage
  • 1 egg
  • 50 grams of grated Parmesan cheese
  • 2 tablespoons of bread crumbs (and a bit more for breading)
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Oil for frying
  • (Optional) a pinch of nutmeg or chopped aromatic herbs like parsley

Preparation

  1. Begin by scoring the sausage casing and remove it so you can use just the meat. Crumble the meat into a bowl.
  2. Add the egg, grated Parmesan, bread crumbs, salt, pepper, and if you like, a pinch of nutmeg or chopped aromatic herbs. Mix well until you get a homogeneous mixture. If the dough is too soft, add more bread crumbs until the desired consistency is reached.
  3. Take portions of the mixture and form meatballs the size of a walnut, then roll them in bread crumbs to coat well.
  4. Heat plenty of oil in a frying pan and when it is hot, fry the meatballs until they are golden and crispy on all sides.
  5. Drain them on paper towels to remove excess oil.
  6. Serve the meatballs hot as an appetizer or main course, accompanied, if you wish, with a sauce of your choice.

Curiosity

Sausage meatballs can vary greatly depending on the Italian regional traditions. In some versions, for example, you might find the addition of chopped wild fennel, which pairs perfectly with the taste of pork. Moreover, they can also be baked in the oven for a lighter but equally tasty version.
