Savory Doughnut with Ham and Cheese

The savory doughnut with ham and cheese is a great idea for brunch or a tasty appetizer. Here’s how to prepare it.

Ingredients

  • 350 g of all-purpose flour
  • 200 ml of lukewarm milk
  • 80 ml of extra virgin olive oil
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 packet of baking powder for savory cakes (about 16 g)
  • 150 g of cooked ham, diced
  • 180 g of stringy cheese (such as scamorza), diced
  • 50 g of grated cheese (Parmesan or Pecorino)
  • Salt to taste
  • Pepper to taste
  • Butter and flour for greasing and flouring the mold

Preparation

  1. Preheat the oven to 180 °C and grease and flour a doughnut mold.
  2. In a bowl, mix eggs with oil and lukewarm milk.
  3. Add the grated cheese and mix well to combine.
  4. Mix in sifted flour and baking powder, salt, and pepper, and stir until smooth and homogeneous.
  5. Add the cooked ham and diced cheese to the mixture and stir gently to distribute them evenly.
  6. Pour the batter into the prepared doughnut mold.
  7. Bake for about 35-40 minutes or until the savory doughnut is golden brown and a skewer inserted in the center comes out clean.
  8. Let the doughnut cool in the mold for a few minutes, then transfer it onto a wire rack to cool completely.

You can serve the savory doughnut warm or at room temperature. It’s perfect for a picnic or as a snack during a party. For a more local variation, you can also add aromatic herbs such as chopped rosemary or sage, to give an additional Italian flavor twist. Enjoy your meal!
