Salty 7-Pot Cake
17/11/2023The savory 7-pot cake is a variation of the sweet version, which uses a pot of yogurt as a unit of measure for the other ingredients. Let’s see how to prepare it.
Ingredients
- 1 pot of natural yogurt (to be used as a unit of measure)
- 3 pots of flour
- 1 pot of seed oil
- 1 pot of milk
- 3 eggs
- 1 pot of grated cheese (parmesan or pecorino)
- 2 pots of ingredients of your choice such as diced cooked ham, chopped olives, grilled vegetables in small pieces, etc.
- 1 packet of leavening for savory cakes
- Salt and pepper to taste
Preparation
- Take a bowl and empty the contents of the yogurt. Using the empty pot as a scoop, add the other ingredients.
- Start with the eggs and lightly beat them, then add the grated cheese.
- Pour in the milk, the oil, and mix well to obtain a homogeneous mixture.
- Add the flour a little at a time, continuing to stir to avoid the formation of lumps.
- Add salt and pepper according to your taste.
- Incorporate the additional ingredients of your choice, such as cooked ham, olives, or mixed vegetables.
- Lastly, add the leavening for savory cakes and mix until it is well distributed in the mixture.
- Pour the mixture into a pre-prepared pan with parchment paper or well buttered and floured.
- Bake in a preheated oven at 180 °C (356 °F) for about 35-40 minutes, until the cake is golden and a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
- Remove the cake from the oven and let it cool before serving.
An all-Italian idea for this cake could be to add a pot of pesto instead of one of the other salty ingredients to give it a unique flavor characteristic of our country. Remember to slightly reduce the salt in this case since pesto is already savory.
Curiosity
The 7-pot cake is an example of practicality in the kitchen, as the use of yogurt and its pot as a scoop allows you to prepare the mixture without the use of a scale. The savory version is perfect for a buffet or picnic and lends itself to numerous variations based on the ingredients you have available or your personal preferences.
