Salmon Temaki

Temaki are nori seaweed cones filled with sushi rice and other ingredients, which can be eaten with your hands. Here’s how to prepare delicious salmon temaki:

Ingredients

  • 200 g of sushi rice
  • 230 ml of water
  • 30 ml of rice vinegar
  • 2 teaspoons of sugar
  • 1 teaspoon of salt
  • 4 sheets of nori seaweed
  • 200 g of fresh salmon fillet
  • 1 avocado
  • 1 cucumber
  • Soy sauce (for dipping)
  • Wasabi (to taste)

Preparation

  1. Start by washing the rice under running water until the water becomes clear. Then cook the rice with the water in a pot with a lid on low heat until all the water has been absorbed and the rice is soft yet still al dente.
  2. While the rice is still hot, season it with rice vinegar, sugar, and salt, mixing gently so as not to crush the grains. Let it cool to room temperature.
  3. Cut the salmon into long, thin strips. Do the same with the avocado and cucumber, cutting them into sticks.
  4. Divide each sheet of nori seaweed in half. Place half a sheet on a sushi mat or cling film, and place a handful of rice in one corner. Flatten the rice into a triangle, leaving about half of the seaweed free on the sides.
  5. Place a strip of salmon, a piece of avocado, and cucumber on the rice.
  6. Roll the seaweed starting from the corner with the rice, creating a cone. The rice will help to close the temaki.
  7. Serve the temaki immediately with soy sauce on the side and a small amount of wasabi if you like.

Trivia

Temaki is a simple and casual form of sushi, perfect for convivial dinners where everyone can make their own cone at the moment.

And to complete this Japanese meal with an Italian touch, you might prepare a fresh and fruity Chardonnay that will compliment the delicate flavor of the salmon.
