Fantasy of Salmon Swirls

Salmon swirls are a delicious and easy-to-make appetizer. Here’s a basic recipe with an Italian twist.

Ingredients

  • 150g of smoked salmon
  • 200g of spreadable cheese (such as Philadelphia or similar)
  • 1 tablespoon of lemon juice
  • 2 tablespoons of chopped fresh dill (or chives if you prefer)
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 4-5 slices of crustless sandwich bread (or loaf bread if you prefer)

Preparation

  1. In a bowl, mix the spreadable cheese with the lemon juice until you get a soft and spreadable cream. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  2. Add the chopped dill (or chives) to the cheese cream and mix well.
  3. Unroll the sandwich bread slices and flatten them further with a rolling pin to get an even thinner thickness.
  4. Spread a uniform layer of cheese cream on each slice of bread.
  5. On each slice of bread, arrange a slice of smoked salmon so that it almost completely covers the surface.
  6. Gently roll up the bread with the salmon to form a tight cylinder.
  7. Wrap each cylinder in plastic wrap and place them in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes so that they firm up.
  8. After resting, remove the plastic wrap and cut each cylinder into swirls about 2 cm thick.
  9. Arrange the swirls on a serving plate and serve.

A variation can be the addition of a little honey mustard to the cheese cream, to add a particularly appreciated touch of flavor by Italians.

Curiosity

Salmon swirls are an elegant finger food highly appreciated on occasions such as aperitifs or buffets. The salmon-dill pairing is typical of Nordic countries, but has now become part of the culinary tradition of many countries, including Italy, for its freshness and tastiness.
