Salmon Demi Baguette

The salmon demi baguette is a delicious snack or appetizer that combines the crispness of bread with the delicacy of smoked salmon. Here’s how you can prepare this simple but elegant dish.

Ingredients

  • 2 demi baguettes (half long bread rolls, similar to mini baguettes)
  • 200 g of smoked salmon
  • 100 g of creamy cheese (such as Philadelphia or another spreadable cheese)
  • 1 tablespoon of fresh chopped dill (or chives)
  • Juice of 1/2 lemon
  • Freshly ground black pepper
  • Capers for garnish (optional)
  • Thin slices of red onion (optional)

Preparation

  1. Cut the two demi baguettes in half, lengthwise, and lightly toast them in the oven if you prefer a crisper crust.
  2. In a bowl, mix the creamy cheese with the freshly chopped dill, lemon juice, and a pinch of freshly ground black pepper.
  3. Generously spread the creamy cheese mixture on the bottom half of each demi baguette.
  4. Arrange the smoked salmon evenly over the cheese.
  5. Add a sprinkling of capers and thin slices of red onion if you wish to add crunchiness and spiciness.
  6. If you like, add an additional pinch of black pepper on top of the salmon.
  7. Cover with the other halves of the baguettes, cut into desired portions, and serve immediately.

Fun Fact

Smoked salmon is a traditional preparation in many Nordic countries, where the fish is preserved through smoking. This process gives the salmon a unique flavor and a particular texture that pairs very well with fresh bread and creamy cheese. In Italy, we might vary this recipe by replacing the dill with fresh basil to achieve a Mediterranean touch.
