Salmon Burger

Salmon burgers are a flavorful dish and a nice variation from the more classic beef burgers. Here’s how you can prepare them, and, given my love for Italian cuisine, I will also suggest a Mediterranean touch.

Ingredients

  • 500 g of fresh salmon, skinless and boneless
  • 1 small red onion, finely chopped
  • 2 tablespoons breadcrumbs
  • 1 egg
  • Juice of half a lemon
  • 1 tablespoon of Dijon mustard
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Extra virgin olive oil for cooking
  • Hamburger buns (optional)
  • Lettuce, tomato, and lemon mayonnaise to serve

Preparation

  1. Finely chop the salmon with a knife or use a food processor, pulsing briefly so as not to turn it into a puree.
  2. In a large bowl, combine the chopped salmon with the red onion, breadcrumbs, egg, lemon juice, and Dijon mustard. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  3. Mix everything well and form burgers to your preferred size. If the mixture is too moist, add a bit more breadcrumbs.
  4. Heat a drizzle of extra virgin olive oil in a non-stick pan and, once hot, cook the salmon burgers for 3-4 minutes per side, or until they are golden brown and cooked to your liking.
  5. Meanwhile, if you wish, you can lightly toast the hamburger buns.
  6. Assemble the burgers by placing some lettuce on the bottom bun, then the salmon burger, followed by a slice of tomato, and finally the lemon mayonnaise.
  7. Cover with the other half of the bun and serve immediately.

For an Italian touch, you might add some finely chopped fresh herbs such as basil or parsley to the salmon mixture, to give an even more Mediterranean flavor to the dish.

Curiosity

The salmon burger is a fantastic alternative for those looking to reduce their red meat intake without giving up the pleasure of a juicy burger. Furthermore, salmon is rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which are known for their heart health benefits.
