Red Velvet Churros

Red velvet churros are a creative interpretation of the classic Spanish dessert with a twist inspired by the famous American red velvet cake. Here’s the recipe:

Ingredients

  • 250 ml of water
  • 2 tablespoons of white sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon of salt
  • 2 tablespoons of red food coloring
  • 2 tablespoons of cocoa powder
  • 150 g of all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon of baking powder
  • 2-3 eggs (depending on size)
  • 50 g of unsalted butter
  • Seed oil for frying
  • Granulated sugar for sprinkling
  • Cream cheese or melted chocolate for serving (optional)

Preparation

  1. In a small saucepan, combine the water, butter, salt, cocoa powder, and 2 tablespoons of sugar. Bring the mixture to a boil, stirring constantly until the butter is completely melted.
  2. Remove the mixture from the heat and add the red food coloring. Mix well to achieve a uniform red color.
  3. Add the sifted flour and baking powder, stirring vigorously until you have a smooth, lump-free dough.
  4. Let the dough cool for a few minutes, then add the eggs one at a time, incorporating them completely before adding the next. Make sure that the dough is smooth and thick enough to hold its shape.
  5. Heat oil in a large pan or deep-fryer to 170°C (340°F).
  6. Fill a piping bag with a star nozzle with the churros dough.
  7. Press the dough out of the piping bag directly into the hot oil, cutting the churros to the desired length with scissors.
  8. Fry the churros until they are crispy and well done on the inside, usually for about 4-5 minutes.
  9. Drain on paper towels and sprinkle the still hot churros with granulated sugar.
  10. Serve hot alone, or with a dipping sauce like cream cheese or melted chocolate.

Curiosity

Churros are traditionally consumed in Spain and Latin America. The red velvet version is a modern adaptation that combines the classic flavor of cocoa with the vibrant red coloring typical of the American red velvet cake, making them an original choice for a dessert or a snack.

Note: To achieve more or less red churros, you can adjust the amount of red food coloring according to your taste. Always remember to work safely when using hot oil for frying.
