Potato Cakes with Peanut Sauce

Potato cakes with peanut sauce are a dish that can bring together rustic flavors with international inspirations, creating a truly delicious mix. Here is how to proceed to make this dish.

Ingredients

  • 500 g of potatoes
  • 1 egg
  • 40 g of grated Parmesan cheese
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Nutmeg to taste
  • Breadcrumbs as needed
  • Oil for frying

For the peanut sauce:

  • 100 g of peanut butter
  • 1 clove of garlic
  • 1 tablespoon of soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon of lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon of honey (or other sweetener of choice)
  • Hot water as needed to achieve the desired consistency
  • Chilli powder to taste (optional)

Preparation

  1. Begin by boiling the potatoes in water until they are soft. Once ready, drain and let them cool.
  2. Mash the potatoes with a potato masher or a fork until you have a smooth mixture. Add the egg, grated Parmesan cheese, salt, pepper, and nutmeg to taste. Mix well to blend all the ingredients.
  3. Form small cakes with the potato mixture and coat them in breadcrumbs.
  4. Heat oil in a frying pan and fry the cakes until golden brown on both sides. Then, let them drain on paper towels to remove the excess oil.
  5. To prepare the peanut sauce, crush the garlic finely and mix it with the peanut butter, soy sauce, lemon juice, and honey. Add the hot water a little at a time until you reach the consistency of a sauce. Season with salt and, if you like, add a pinch of chilli powder for a spicy touch.

Serve the warm potato cakes accompanied by the peanut sauce. This is a personal interpretation that combines the tradition of potato cakes with an exotic touch given by the peanut sauce.

Curiosity

Peanut-based sauces are very common in various cuisines around the world, especially in African and Asian ones. The pairing with potatoes, however, is less common and represents an example of how it is possible to create an innovative dish based on simple and familiar ingredients.
