Potato and Sausage Casserole

The potato and sausage casserole is a comforting and hearty dish, typical of Italian home cooking. Here is the recipe you could follow.

Ingredients

  • 1 kg of potatoes
  • 500 g of fresh sausage
  • 2 onions
  • 2 cloves of garlic
  • 150 g of mozzarella
  • 50 g of grated Parmesan cheese
  • 2 eggs
  • 100 ml of milk
  • Nutmeg to taste
  • Extra virgin olive oil
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Butter for the baking dish
  • Breadcrumbs for the baking dish

Preparation

  1. Prepare the potatoes: peel them and slice them thinly. Put them in cold water to remove excess starch, then drain well.

  2. In a pan, fry the chopped garlic and sliced onions in extra virgin olive oil. Add the crumbled sausage and cook until well browned. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

  3. Take a baking dish and grease it with a bit of butter, then sprinkle the bottom with breadcrumbs.

  4. Begin assembling the casserole by alternating layers of potatoes and sausage until all the ingredients are used up. Every so often, sprinkle with mozzarella cut into cubes and grated Parmesan cheese.

  5. In a separate bowl, beat the eggs with the milk, a pinch of salt, pepper, and a pinch of nutmeg. Pour this mixture over the casserole.

  6. Complete with a sprinkling of Parmesan cheese and a few bits of butter dotted here and there on the surface.

  7. Bake the casserole in a preheated oven at 180 °C (356 °F) for about 40-45 minutes or until the surface is golden brown and crispy.

  8. Allow to rest for a few minutes before serving.

Curiosity

The casserole is a versatile dish that can be modified according to tastes and needs. You can add vegetables like spinach or mushrooms between the layers, or substitute part of the potatoes with sliced zucchini for a lighter version. In some regional variants, you will find the addition of hard-boiled eggs between the layers or a different type of melting cheese in place of the mozzarella.
