Plum Crumble
17/11/2023Plum crumble is a rustic and delicious dessert, perfect for making the most of seasonal plums. Here is the recipe, with an Italian twist that I’ll try to add for you.
Ingredients
- 600 g of plums
- 150 g of all-purpose flour
- 80 g of brown sugar
- 80 g of cold butter
- 50 g of chopped almonds (to add an Italian touch, let’s include almonds which pair well with plums)
- A pinch of salt
- 1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon (optional)
Preparation
- Preheat the oven to 180 °C.
- Wash the plums, cut them in half, and remove the pits. If the plums are particularly sour, you can sprinkle them with a bit of sugar before proceeding.
- Arrange the plum pieces in a lightly buttered baking dish or in a casserole.
- In a bowl, mix the flour with the brown sugar, chopped almonds, and a pinch of salt. Add the cold butter, cut into cubes, and work the mixture with your fingertips until you obtain coarse crumbs, similar to a crumble. If desired, at this point, you can also add a teaspoon of cinnamon for a spicier fragrance.
- Spread the crumble over the plums in the baking dish.
- Bake for about 30-40 minutes or until the surface is golden and crunchy.
- Remove from the oven and let cool slightly before serving.
Plum crumble can be served warm or at room temperature, optionally accompanied by a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream.
Curiosity
Crumble is a dessert of British origin, very versatile: it can be prepared with different kinds of fruit, depending on the season. The Italian version could be enriched with the addition of nuts like almonds, typical of our confectionery, which contribute to giving a crunchy touch and a distinctive flavor.
