Phyllo Dough Baskets with Ice Cream

Phyllo dough baskets with ice cream are a delicious and elegant dessert that combines the crispiness of phyllo dough with the freshness of ice cream. Here’s how to make them.

Ingredients

  • 6 sheets of phyllo dough
  • 50 g of melted butter
  • Powdered sugar (to taste)
  • Favorite flavor of ice cream
  • Fresh fruit for garnishing (for example: strawberries, raspberries, or blueberries)
  • Fresh mint for decoration (optional)

Preparation

  1. Preheat the oven to 180 °C (350 °F).
  2. Lay a sheet of phyllo dough on a flat surface and gently brush it with the melted butter. Sprinkle some powdered sugar over the surface.
  3. Place a second sheet of phyllo dough on top, pressing gently to make it stick to the first. Repeat the process with at least two more sheets, brushing and sprinkling each with melted butter and powdered sugar.
  4. Once you have layered about 3-4 sheets, cut the rectangle into squares large enough to fit into your molds (usually 10-12 cm).
  5. Lightly butter the molds (you can use muffin tins or dessert rings) and place the phyllo squares inside, shaping them to form baskets. Ensure that the edges poke out slightly from the molds.
  6. Bake the phyllo baskets for about 5-7 minutes or until they become golden and crispy.
  7. Once ready, remove the baskets from the oven and let them cool.
  8. When serving, fill the baskets with scoops of your favorite ice cream.
  9. Garnish with fresh fruit and, if desired, decorate with fresh mint leaves.
  10. If you like, you can dust with additional powdered sugar before serving.

Trivia

Phyllo dough is a type of paper-thin dough used extensively in Mediterranean and Middle Eastern cuisine. Its unique feature lies in its versatility and the ability to become incredibly crispy once baked. This characteristic makes it perfect for creating textural contrasts with the soft and creamy ice cream.
