Turkey sandwich

The turkey sandwich is a simple and appreciated dish, especially after the holidays when you have leftover meat to use. Here’s how to put it together with an Italian touch.

Ingredients

  • 2 slices of bread, preferably rustic or whole grain for a richer flavor
  • 100 g of sliced roasted turkey
  • 2 lettuce leaves
  • 2 tomato slices
  • Mayonnaise, to taste
  • Mustard, to taste
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 1 tablespoon of extra virgin olive oil (for a more Italian variation)
  • A few leaves of fresh basil (for an Italian touch)

Preparation

  1. If you prefer, you can lightly toast the bread in a toaster or on a pan to add crispiness to the sandwich.
  2. Spread one side of the bread slices with a thin layer of mayonnaise and a pinch of mustard, according to taste.
  3. Place the turkey slices on the bread.
  4. Add the tomato slices and washed and dried lettuce leaves.
  5. Season with a pinch of salt and pepper.
  6. To give it a more Italian flavor, add a drizzle of extra virgin olive oil and some hand-torn basil leaves.
  7. Close the sandwich with the other slice of bread.
  8. If you wish, you can cut the sandwich diagonally.

Fun facts

The turkey sandwich is very popular in the United States, where roasted turkey is traditionally served for Thanksgiving lunch. The following day, it is customary to make sandwiches with the leftovers from the feast.

Remember that you can customize your sandwich as you like. For example, for a richer variant, you might add slices of cheese such as cheddar or provolone, and perhaps warm the sandwich in a panini press to make it hot and toasted. Enjoy your meal!
