Pancakes with Maple Syrup

Preparing pancakes with maple syrup is very simple. I will provide you with a basic recipe to which I’ll also add an Italian touch. Here are the necessary ingredients and the procedure.

Ingredients

  • 135 g of wheat flour
  • 1 tablespoon of sugar
  • 1 teaspoon of baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda
  • 1 pinch of salt
  • 130 ml of milk
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 tablespoons of melted butter (plus a little more for greasing the pan)
  • Maple syrup for serving

Preparation

  1. In a large bowl, sift together the flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  2. In another bowl, lightly beat the egg and pour in the milk and melted butter. Mix well.
  3. Pour the egg and milk mixture into the bowl with the dry ingredients, mixing just enough to combine the ingredients. Don’t worry if the batter is a little lumpy.
  4. Heat a non-stick pan or griddle over medium heat and grease with a bit of butter.
  5. Pour a small amount of batter for each pancake and cook for about 2 minutes, until you see bubbles forming on the surface. When this happens, flip it and cook for another 1-2 minutes on the other side.
  6. Serve the pancakes warm with maple syrup poured on top.

To add an Italian touch, you can also serve the pancakes with lightly sugared ricotta and drizzled with a stream of maple syrup, or maybe accompany with slices of fresh fruit such as apples or pears finely cut and lightly caramelized in a pan with a touch of butter and sugar.

Curiosities

Although pancakes are a much-appreciated breakfast in North America, they have ancient roots and similar recipes can be found in many cultures, such as crêpes in France or blinis in Russia. Also, the combination of sweet (pancake and maple syrup) and savory (ricotta) is a delicious representation of how contrasts in the kitchen often create unforgettable dishes.
