Onion Rings

Onion rings are a crispy appetizer beloved all over the world. Here’s how to make them with an Italian touch, by adding grated parmesan to the batter for an even tastier flavor.

Ingredients

  • 2 large onions
  • 120 g of type 00 flour
  • 2 eggs
  • 100 ml of milk
  • 50 g of grated parmesan
  • Bread crumbs as needed
  • Salt as needed
  • Pepper as needed
  • Oil for frying

Preparation

  1. Begin by peeling the onions and slicing them into rings about 0.5 cm thick. Carefully separate the individual rings and set them aside.

  2. Prepare a batter by mixing in a bowl the flour, eggs, and milk. Add the parmesan, a pinch of salt and pepper, stirring until you get a smooth mixture.

  3. Prepare a second bowl with the bread crumbs.

  4. Dip each onion ring into the batter, making sure it’s well covered, and then into the bread crumbs, pressing the breading to adhere well.

  5. Heat plenty of oil in a pan and once it has reached the right temperature (a piece of bread should fry without burning), immerse the onion rings.

  6. Fry the rings until they are golden and crispy, then remove them from the oil and place them on paper towels to remove the excess grease.

  7. Serve hot, perhaps accompanied by a tomato sauce or aioli for an additional Mediterranean touch.

Fun Fact

Onion rings are commonly associated with American cuisine. However, by reinventing them with ingredients like parmesan, we make this recipe our own Italian way, fitting it perfectly into an appetizer or traditional Italian antipasto.
