Mozzarella Balls

Mozzarella balls are a delicious and easy-to-prepare snack. Ideal for an aperitif or as an appetizer, they are small spheres of mozzarella wrapped in a crispy layer of breadcrumbs and fried.

Ingredients

  • 250 g of pizza mozzarella or mozzarella in carrozza
  • 1 egg
  • 100 g of breadcrumbs
  • 50 g of flour
  • Salt, as needed
  • Pepper, as needed
  • Vegetable oil for frying (e.g., peanut or sunflower oil)

Preparation

  1. Begin by draining the mozzarella of its liquid and drying it with paper towels. Cut it into cubes of about 1-2 centimeters.

  2. Prepare three separate containers for breading: in the first, put the flour; in the second, beat the egg with a pinch of salt and pepper; and in the third, place the breadcrumbs.

  3. Coat each mozzarella cube first in the flour, making sure to cover all sides, then dip them in the egg, and finally in the breadcrumbs. Ensure that each ball is well coated with breadcrumbs to prevent the mozzarella from leaking out during cooking.

  4. Once all the mozzarella balls are breaded, put them in the refrigerator for about 10-15 minutes. This will help to set the breading.

  5. Meanwhile, heat plenty of vegetable oil in a pan or deep fryer to a temperature of about 175 °C.

  6. Fry the mozzarella balls in hot oil until they are golden and crispy, for about 1-2 minutes. Do not overcrowd the pan; fry the balls in small batches to keep the oil temperature constant.

  7. Once fried, drain them on kitchen paper towels to remove excess oil.

  8. Serve hot, accompanied with a tomato sauce or aioli sauce for dipping as desired.

A tip: for an even more Italian touch, you could add some grated Parmesan cheese or aromatic herbs like basil or oregano to the breadcrumb mixture.

Enjoy your meal!
