Mortadella Puff Pastry Bundles

Mortadella puff pastry bundles are a tasty and simple appetizer to make. Here’s the recipe for you.

Ingredients

  • 1 roll of rectangular puff pastry
  • 150 g of mortadella in thin slices
  • 100 g of creamy cheese (such as stracchino or robiola)
  • 1 egg yolk
  • Sesame or poppy seeds (optional)
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Preparation

  1. Preheat the oven to 180 °C.
  2. Unroll the puff pastry and lay it out on a flat surface.
  3. Spread the creamy cheese over the entire surface of the puff pastry, leaving a free margin on the edges.
  4. Arrange the mortadella slices on top of the cheese, slightly overlapping them.
  5. Season with a pinch of salt and pepper to your taste.
  6. Roll up the puff pastry on itself, starting from the longer side, until you have a roll.
  7. Cut the roll into pieces about 2 cm thick.
  8. Beat the egg yolk and brush it over the surface of the bundles.
  9. If you like, sprinkle the bundles with sesame or poppy seeds to add a crunchy touch.
  10. Place the bundles on a baking tray lined with parchment paper.
  11. Bake and cook for about 15-20 minutes, or until the bundles are golden brown and puffed up.
  12. Remove from the oven and let cool before serving.

Serve the mortadella puff pastry bundles as an appetizer or to accompany an aperitif. It is a very versatile recipe: you can vary the ingredients by replacing the mortadella with other cold cuts or adding aromatic herbs to the cheese for an extra touch of flavor.

Curiosity

Mortadella is a typical Italian cold cut, known all over the world for its delicate flavor and soft texture. It’s native to Bologna, where it is still produced today following traditional methods. Its name derives from the Latin “farciare,” which means to stuff, precisely because it was traditionally prepared by filling the pig’s intestine with a minced meat mixture.
