Moretta fanese

La Moretta fanese is a typical cocktail of the city of Fano, Italy. It is a warm drink based on coffee enriched with a blend of alcoholic spirits that make it particularly appreciated during the winter period. The characteristic that distinguishes it is the presence of spirits such as rum, anise, and brandy. The name “Moretta” derives from the dark color given by the coffee and the spirits.

Ingredients

  • Long espresso coffee, 1 cup
  • Rum, about 1/3 of the amount of coffee
  • Anise, about 1/3 of the amount of coffee
  • Brandy or Cognac, about 1/3 of the amount of coffee
  • Sugar to taste
  • Lemon peel

Preparation

  1. Prepare a long espresso coffee.
  2. Pour into a small warm coffee cup about one third of rum, one third of anise, and one third of brandy.
  3. Add sugar to taste and stir until completely dissolved.
  4. Finally, add the hot coffee.
  5. Rub the lemon zest around the rim of the cup to flavor it and garnish to taste with the same zest.
  6. Serve the Moretta fanese hot.

Curiosity

Tradition has it that the Moretta should be served without the use of spoons for stirring, as it is assumed that everyone, adding the ingredients in their own glass, already knows in which proportion they wish to enjoy their cocktail. Some variations of the recipe may also include a pinch of chocolate or powdered cinnamon, for a more aromatically complex note.
