Mint Sorbet

Mint sorbet is a delicious refreshing dessert option, especially during the hotter months. Here is the traditional recipe:

Ingredients

  • 500 ml of water
  • 200 g of sugar
  • Juice of 1 lemon
  • 1 bunch of fresh mint leaves
  • 1 egg white (optional)

Preparation

  1. In a small pot, bring water and sugar to a boil to prepare a simple syrup. Stir until the sugar has completely dissolved, then let it cool.
  2. Meanwhile, wash the mint leaves well and gently pat them dry.
  3. Once the syrup is cold, add the lemon juice and mint leaves. Allow to infuse for about an hour to let the mint release all its flavor.
  4. Strain the mixture, removing the mint leaves. If you desire a more intense flavor, you can blend some leaves with the syrup before straining it.
  5. Pour the mixture into an ice cream maker and follow the manufacturer’s instructions to make the sorbet. If you don’t have an ice cream maker, pour the mixture into a container and place it in the freezer. Stir every 30-40 minutes to break up the ice crystals until the sorbet reaches the desired consistency.
  6. (Optional) If you want a creamier sorbet, you can whip an egg white until stiff and gently fold it into the mixture before freezing.
  7. Serve the mint sorbet in chilled cups or in hollowed-out lemons for an elegant presentation.

Did you know?

Sorbet has very ancient origins, with stories that trace it back to the times of ancient Rome. Certainly, its name comes from the Arabic “sharbat”, and it is a preparation that teases the palate between courses, ideal for “cleansing” the palate.
