Milk Cookies

Milk cookies are a simple and delicious snack, perfect to accompany with a glass of milk. Here is the recipe:

Ingredients

  • 500g of all-purpose flour
  • 200g of sugar
  • 100g of butter at room temperature
  • 200ml of whole milk
  • 1 packet of baking powder
  • 1 egg
  • 1 pinch of salt
  • Granulated sugar or powdered sugar (for decorating, optional)
  • Flavor of choice (vanilla, grated lemon zest, etc.)

Preparation

  1. Preheat the oven to 180 °C.
  2. In a large bowl, mix the flour with the baking powder and a pinch of salt.
  3. In another bowl, cream the soft butter with the sugar;
  4. Add the egg to the butter and sugar cream and blend well.
  5. Gradually pour in the milk and continue mixing.
  6. Add the chosen flavor. If you’re using vanilla, for example, you can add the seeds of a vanilla bean or a teaspoon of pure extract.
  7. Combine the liquid mixture with the dry ingredients, mixing until you have a smooth dough.
  8. Roll out the dough on a floured surface to a thickness of about half a centimeter.
  9. Use cookie cutters to shape your cookies.
  10. Place them on a baking tray lined with parchment paper, leaving a bit of space between each.
  11. If desired, sprinkle the surface of the cookies with granulated sugar or powdered sugar to add crunchiness and sweetness.
  12. Bake for about 10-15 minutes, or until the cookies are lightly golden.
  13. Remove from the oven and let the cookies cool on a wire rack before serving.

Interesting Facts

Many do not know that the term “cookie” comes from the Latin “bis coctus,” which means “baked twice,” referring to the original baking method of these sweets, which were baked once, then sliced and baked again to make them crisp and long-lasting. Of course, modern cookies like these do not require double baking!
