Microwave Potato Chips

Microwave potato chips are a quick and less fatty solution compared to classic fried chips. Here’s how you can prepare them.

Ingredients

  • 2 medium-sized potatoes
  • Extra virgin olive oil
  • Fine salt, to taste
  • Spices as desired (paprika, rosemary, garlic powder, etc.), optional

Preparation

  1. Wash the potatoes well and dry them. If you prefer, you can also peel them, but the skin will add crunchiness.
  2. Slice the potatoes as thinly as possible, ideally with a mandolin for even thickness.
  3. Place the slices in a bowl with cold water for about 5-10 minutes to remove the excess starch, which will help the chips become crispier.
  4. Drain the potato slices and dry them very well with a clean cloth or with kitchen paper.
  5. Lightly grease a microwave-safe plate with a little oil and arrange the slices without overlapping.
  6. Brush the slices with a drizzle of extra virgin olive oil and sprinkle with the salt and, if desired, with your choice of spices.
  7. Cook in the microwave at maximum power for about 3-5 minutes, but be careful, the time can vary depending on the power of your microwave and the thickness of the slices. Start with short times and check your chips often to not burn them.
  8. Once the chips begin to brown, take them out and let them cool for a couple of minutes. They will become even crispier.

Curiosity

Potato chips originated in England where they are called “crisps” to distinguish them from “chips,” which we call french fries. The microwave version is a modern invention that fits into a hectic life and the search for healthier cooking methods.

Enjoy your meal and have fun experimenting with different spices and flavors to customize your chips!
