Microwave-baked apples

Microwave-baked apples are a simple and delicious dessert, perfect for a quick sweet treat. Here I provide you with a basic version, but remember that you can always add an Italian touch with a pinch of cinnamon or a sprinkle of crushed amaretti cookies on top of the apples before serving.

Ingredients

  • 2 apples
  • 2 tablespoons of brown sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon of ground cinnamon (optional)
  • Lemon juice (optional)

Preparation

  1. Start by washing the apples well. Remove the core with a corer or, if not available, cut the apples in half and use a knife to remove the central part with the seeds.
  2. Place the apples on a microwave-safe plate. If you have cut them in half, place them with the cut side up.
  3. Sprinkle the apples with brown sugar and cinnamon. Cinnamon adds a classic Italian flavor that pairs well with the scent of apples.
  4. Add a couple of tablespoons of water to the bottom of the plate; this will help to create steam during cooking.
  5. If you like, you can drizzle the apples with some lemon juice to prevent them from browning and to add a touch of acidity.
  6. Cover the apples with microwave-safe film or another plate to retain the steam.
  7. Cook the apples in the microwave on high power for about 3-5 minutes, or until soft. Cooking time may vary depending on the microwave and size of the apples.
  8. Be careful when removing the cover or film, as the steam will be hot.
  9. Let it cool slightly before serving.

You can serve them either warm or cold, perhaps with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or some sweetened ricotta to make the dessert even more special.

Curiosity

In Italian folklore, the apple is often associated with health and prosperity. “An apple a day keeps the doctor away” is a saying that emphasizes the beneficial properties of this fruit, and even in fairy tales, like that of Snow White, the apple plays a central role. In the case of the fairy tale, although it is poisoned, the fruit is described as irresistibly delicious.
