Saccottini

I can give you the recipe for saccottini, which are very delicious puff pastries. For this recipe, the idea is to make saccottini filled with jam, typically seen in Italian pastry shops.

Ingredients

  • 1 roll of rectangular puff pastry
  • Jam of choice (for example, apricot, strawberry, or chocolate)
  • Powdered sugar for dusting
  • 1 egg yolk for brushing

Preparation

  1. Preheat the oven to 200°C.
  2. Roll out the puff pastry and cut it into squares of about 8x8 cm.
  3. Place a teaspoon of jam in the center of each square.
  4. Fold the squares into a triangle by crossing them over to enclose the filling, then press down the edges well with your fingers or a fork to prevent them from opening while baking.
  5. Beat the egg yolk and brush it over the saccottini before baking them, this will give the saccottini a nice golden color.
  6. Bake the saccottini on a baking tray lined with parchment paper for about 15-20 minutes or until they are golden brown.
  7. Let them cool slightly then dust with powdered sugar before serving.

Fun Fact

Saccottini are a variant of classic croissants and other puff pastries. While croissants are associated with French breakfasts, saccottini are more versatile in Italy and can be served as tea cookies or dessert pastries. In many Italian pastry shops, saccottini are available with a wide range of fillings, including classic fruit flavors and more innovative creams.

For an even more Italian touch, you could add custard cream or mascarpone together with the jam in your saccottini. Enjoy your meal!
