17/11/2023Fried calamari is a beloved dish in many countries, especially in Italy where fish fry is a fascinating culinary tradition. Adding lime gives a touch of freshness that pairs well with the flavor of the calamari.
Ingredients
- 500 g of cleaned calamari, cut into rings
- Juice of one lime
- Grated zest of one lime
- Salt to taste
- Black pepper to taste
- 100 g of flour
- Oil for frying
Preparation
- In a bowl, season the calamari rings with salt and pepper.
- Add the lime juice and let marinate for about 15-30 minutes. This will help to soften the calamari and add flavor.
- Heat the oil in a frying pan or deep fryer to a temperature of 180°C.
- Meanwhile, drain the calamari from the marinade and pat them dry slightly with kitchen paper.
- Coat the calamari rings in the flour, making sure to cover them evenly.
- Fry the rings in hot oil until they become golden and crispy, usually 2-3 minutes.
- Remove the calamari from the oil with a slotted spoon and let them drain on kitchen paper to remove excess oil.
- While they are still hot, lightly sprinkle them with the grated lime zest.
Serve immediately to enjoy the calamari at their crispiest and most flavorful.
Curiosity
Calamari is an extremely versatile ingredient, famous not only in Mediterranean traditions but also in Asia, where it is often used in salads or stir-fried with strong spices. Using lime instead of lemon is a great alternative for a different twist. In some Italo-Asian preparations, calamari can be served with a side sauce, such as a wasabi mayonnaise to add a spicy and unusual experience.
