Lentil Burger

Lentil burgers are an excellent plant-based alternative to classic meat burgers. Here you find a simple and tasty recipe:

Ingredients

  • 250 g of lentils (better if already cooked)
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 1 clove of garlic, chopped
  • 1 carrot, grated
  • 1 tablespoon of tomato paste
  • 1 teaspoon of smoked paprika
  • 1 teaspoon of cumin
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Breadcrumbs or flour, as needed for binding
  • Extra virgin olive oil for cooking

Preparation

  1. If you have purchased dry lentils, rinse and cook them in boiling water until tender, then drain well.

  2. In a frying pan, sauté the onion and garlic in oil until they become translucent. Add the grated carrot and cook for another 2-3 minutes.

  3. In a large bowl, mash the lentils with a fork or use a food processor to get a coarse mixture.

  4. Add the sautéed onion, garlic, and carrot, tomato paste, smoked paprika, and cumin to the lentil mixture. Mix well and season with salt and pepper.

  5. Add breadcrumbs or flour a little at a time until the mixture is compact enough to form burgers.

  6. Shape the burgers with your hands, then let them rest in the fridge for at least 30 minutes to firm up.

  7. Heat some oil in a non-stick pan and cook the burgers for about 4-5 minutes per side, until they are golden and crispy.

Serve the lentil burgers on a bun with classic toppings like lettuce, tomato, sauces, or as you prefer. They are also perfect on their own with a salad or grilled vegetables. Enjoy your meal!
