Lasagna with cod, shrimp, and mullet

Lasagna with cod, shrimp, and mullet is a refined and tasty variation of the classic Italian dish. Let’s see how to prepare it.

Ingredients

  • 12 fresh lasagna sheets (or fresh pasta dough to cut)
  • 300 g of already soaked and cleaned cod
  • 200 g of peeled shrimp
  • 200 g of cleaned mullet fillets
  • 1 clove of garlic
  • 200 ml of tomato puree
  • 100 ml of dry white wine
  • Extra virgin olive oil to taste
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Chopped parsley
  • 50 g of all-purpose flour (for the roux)
  • 50 g of butter (for the roux)
  • 500 ml of milk (for the béchamel)
  • Nutmeg to taste (for the béchamel)
  • 100 g of grated Parmesan cheese
  • Fresh basil for garnish

Preparation

  1. Start by preparing the cod. Cut it into pieces and cook it in a pan with a drizzle of oil and a clove of garlic. When it is golden, deglaze with the white wine until it evaporates and set it aside.

  2. In a separate pan, sauté the shrimp with oil, garlic, salt, and pepper. Add the tomato, a pinch of salt, and cook for about 10 minutes. Then add the cod and continue cooking for another 5 minutes. Turn off the heat and add the chopped parsley.

  3. Prepare the béchamel by making a roux with butter and flour in a saucepan, cooking for a couple of minutes. Gradually add the hot milk, stirring continuously until a smooth cream is obtained. Season with salt, pepper, and a grating of nutmeg.

  4. Prepare the mullet fillets by briefly sautéing them in a pan with oil, salt, and pepper.

  5. Now assemble the lasagna. Grease the bottom of a baking dish with some béchamel. Place the first layer of lasagna sheets, then a layer of béchamel, the mixture of cod and shrimp, and some pieces of mullet. Sprinkle with grated Parmesan cheese.

  6. Repeat the steps to create more layers until all the ingredients are used up, finishing with béchamel and a generous sprinkling of Parmesan.

  7. Bake in a preheated oven at 180°C for about 30-40 minutes or until the lasagna is golden and bubbling.

  8. Let the lasagna rest for 10 minutes before serving. Garnish with fresh basil leaves.

Curiosity

this interpretation of lasagna strays from the classic ragu and béchamel to embrace the flavors of the sea, offering an elegant meal that can also be served on formal occasions or special dinners. The cod, with its saltiness, pairs well with the sweetness of the shrimp and the unique texture of the mullet, creating a dish rich in flavors and textures.
