Jam Swirls

Jam swirls are a simple and tasty dessert, perfect for breakfast or as a snack. Here is the recipe to prepare them:

Ingredients

  • 250 g of all-purpose flour
  • 150 g of sugar
  • 1 whole egg + 1 yolk
  • 75 g of soft butter
  • 1 sachet of vanillin
  • A pinch of salt
  • 1 teaspoon of baking powder for sweets
  • Fruit jam of choice (for example, apricot, strawberry, or blackberry) to taste
  • Icing sugar for decoration (optional)

Preparation

  1. In a large bowl, whisk the whole egg, the yolk, and the sugar until you have a light and frothy mixture.
  2. Add the soft butter in pieces, the vanillina, and a pinch of salt, and work everything until the butter is completely absorbed.
  3. Gradually incorporate the flour previously sifted with the baking powder, mixing until you have a smooth dough.
  4. Form a ball with the dough, wrap it in transparent film and let it rest in the fridge for at least 30 minutes.
  5. Once rested, roll out the dough with a rolling pin on a floured surface, trying to get a rectangular shape and a thickness of about 5 mm.
  6. Spread the jam evenly over the dough surface leaving an edge on the borders to prevent it from leaking out during baking.
  7. Roll up the dough on itself starting from the long side to form a tightly rolled log.
  8. Wrap the roll of dough and jam in transparent film and put it back in the fridge for another hour.
  9. Preheat the oven to 180 °C (static) or 160 °C (convection).
  10. Remove the film and cut the log into slices about 1-2 cm thick.
  11. Place the swirls on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, keeping some distance between them.
  12. Bake in the oven for about 15-20 minutes or until they are slightly golden.
  13. Let them cool on a wire rack and, if you wish, dust with icing sugar before serving.

Jam swirls can be stored for a few days in an airtight container, and are perfect for dipping in milk or tea.

Curiosity

These swirls are very versatile: you can experiment with different types of jam to vary their flavor. Furthermore, some variations may include the addition of grated lemon zest or cinnamon in the dough for an extra touch.
