Popsicles

Popsicles are a refreshing and enjoyable snack, especially during the warmer months. Here is a basic recipe for making homemade popsicles with an Italian twist, using fresh seasonal fruit.

Ingredients

  • 500 ml of fresh fruit juice (such as orange, watermelon, peach, or a mix of berries)
  • 2-3 tablespoons of sugar (optional, depending on the sweetness of the fruit)
  • Grated zest of lemon or orange (for a citrus touch)
  • Fresh mint or basil leaves (for a typical Italian aromatic note, optional)

Preparation

  1. Take the fresh fruit and blend it to obtain the juice. If you have chosen a fruit like watermelon or peach, mashing it with a fork might be enough.
  2. Taste the obtained juice and, if necessary, adjust it with sugar. Remember that the sweet taste will decrease slightly once frozen.
  3. For a taste more in line with Italian cuisine, you can add a bit of grated lemon or orange zest, to give a fresher and more citrusy flavor.
  4. You can also add finely chopped mint or basil leaves for a distinctive aroma that pairs well with many fruits.
  5. Fill popsicle molds with the prepared juice.
  6. Insert popsicle sticks into the mold and place them in the freezer.
  7. Freeze for at least 4 hours, but preferably overnight.

When they are completely frozen, to remove them from the molds more easily, run the molds under warm water for a few seconds. Then pull out the popsicles and they will be ready to enjoy!

Curiosity

Popsicles, also known as “ice pops” or “popsicle,” originated in the early 1900s in the United States. They have become popular around the world, with regional variations that include local ingredients and personal taste preferences. In Italy, fruit popsicles are particularly appreciated, and are often made with seasonal fruit, for a refreshing and natural summer dessert.
