Ice Cream Waffle

Ice cream waffles are a delicious dessert that combines the crunchiness of warm waffles with the freshness of ice cream. Here’s how to prepare them with an Italian twist.

Ingredients

  • 250g of flour
  • 30g of sugar
  • 1 sachet of baking powder for sweets
  • 1 pinch of salt
  • 2 eggs, separated
  • 90g of melted and cooled butter
  • 300ml of milk
  • 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract
  • Ice cream (flavor of choice, but classic fiordilatte or cream work well with everything)
  • Fresh fruit (for example, strawberries or raspberries) to garnish
  • Chocolate or caramel syrup, to taste

Preparation

  1. In a bowl, mix the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt.
  2. In another bowl, lightly beat the egg yolks and then add the melted butter, milk, and vanilla extract.
  3. Combine the liquid ingredients with the dry ones and mix until the mixture is smooth.
  4. Whip the egg whites until stiff and gently fold them into the batter to make the waffles fluffier.
  5. Preheat the waffle iron and, once hot, pour a ladle of the batter for each waffle. Cook until they are golden and crispy.
  6. Serve the hot waffles with a scoop of ice cream in the center, garnish with fresh fruit, and drizzle chocolate or caramel syrup to taste.

Curiosity

Did you know that waffles are a specialty originating from Belgium? However, they have spread all over the world, and in Italy, they can be enjoyed with a variety of toppings, from the simplest with powdered sugar and Nutella to more elaborate ones with ice cream and fresh fruit. Moreover, in the Italian version, a note of liqueur, such as Amaretto, is often added to the batter, to give an additional fragrance and flavor to the dish.
