Ice cream cone

I can guide you in making artisanal ice cream cones. Preparing ice cream cones at home requires a few ingredients and a specific tool: a waffle iron or an ice cream cone iron, but you can also improvise with a non-stick pan.

Ingredients

  • 100g of powdered sugar
  • 3 egg whites
  • 60g of cooled melted butter
  • 100g of flour
  • A pinch of salt
  • 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract (optional, for flavoring)

Preparation

  1. In a bowl, mix the egg whites and powdered sugar until you have a homogeneous mixture. Add the cooled melted butter, and then incorporate the flour and salt until you get a smooth batter. If you wish, you can add a teaspoon of vanilla extract to add an extra aroma.
  2. Heat the waffle iron to medium temperature. If you do not have the iron, you can lightly grease a non-stick pan and heat it up.
  3. Pour a small ladle of batter in the center of the iron or pan and use the back of the ladle to spread the batter into a thin, even layer.
  4. Cook for about 1-2 minutes or until the wafer becomes golden at the edges.
  5. Quickly remove the wafer from the iron with a spatula and wrap it around an ice cream cone or aluminum cones to shape it. Work quickly, as the wafer will harden rapidly as it cools.
  6. Let the cone cool on a support that maintains its shape (for example, a glass or a bottle).
  7. After a few minutes, remove your cone from the support and allow it to cool completely before serving.

Remember that the cones must be stored in an airtight container to maintain their crispiness.

Curiosity

The ice cream cones as we know them today originated in the early 1900s. The most well-known legend about their invention dates back to the 1904 World’s Fair in St. Louis, Missouri, where an ice cream vendor ran out of bowls and would have utilized the idea of a neighboring waffle seller to create practical and edible cones.
