Homemade powdered sugar

Making powdered sugar at home is very simple and allows you to always have it fresh and ready for use. Here is the recipe:

Ingredients

  • 100 g of granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon of cornstarch (optional, it prevents the sugar from clumping)

Preparation

  1. Pour the granulated sugar into the container of a mixer or a powerful blender.
  2. If you have decided to use cornstarch, add it together with the sugar.
  3. Turn on the mixer at maximum power and let it process the sugar until it reaches a very fine consistency, almost impalpable. This usually takes about 1-2 minutes, depending on the power of your blender.
  4. Take a short pause if the blender gets too hot, and then continue until the desired consistency is achieved.
  5. Once the sugar has reached the consistency of a very fine powder, your powdered sugar is ready.
  6. Pass the powdered sugar through a fine sieve to remove any lumps and to obtain an even finer powder.
  7. Store the powdered sugar in an airtight container to keep it dry and to prevent it from clumping.

Curiosity

Powdered sugar, also known as confectioner’s sugar or icing sugar, is used in pastry primarily to sweeten and to decorate: it is indeed the perfect finish to garnish cupcakes, brownies, spoon desserts, and much more. Moreover, it dissolves easily, making it ideal for preparing icings and creams.

Remember that if you are using powdered sugar for recipes that require cooking, cornstarch is not strictly necessary, while it can be useful for long-term sugar preservation or for raw preparations.
