Homemade Fish Sticks

Homemade fish sticks are a great alternative to the pre-packaged ones and can be prepared with various types of fish depending on personal taste and availability. Here is an easy recipe to follow.

Ingredients

  • 400 g of white fish fillets (such as cod, hake, or plaice)
  • 100 g of breadcrumbs
  • 50 g of flour
  • 2 eggs
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Aromatic herbs as desired (such as parsley or dill)
  • Lemon juice
  • Olive oil (for frying) or vegetable oil

Preparation

  1. Start by cleaning and drying the fish fillets, then cut them into strips about 2-3 cm wide so that they resemble sticks.
  2. In a large bowl, beat the eggs with a pinch of salt and pepper and a bit of lemon juice.
  3. In another bowl, mix the breadcrumbs well with the finely chopped aromatic herbs, adding also a pinch of salt and pepper.
  4. Coat each fish stick first in the flour, then in the beaten egg, and finally in the aromatic breadcrumbs, making sure the coating adheres well.
  5. Heat a generous amount of oil in a frying pan and fry the sticks until they are golden and crispy, which will take about 2-3 minutes per side.
  6. Drain them on paper towels and serve hot, possibly with lemon wedges and a sauce of your choice, such as mayonnaise or tartar sauce.

Curiosity

Fish sticks became popular in the 1950s as a practical and appealing way to get children to eat fish. The homemade version allows control over the quality of the ingredients and to customize the flavor with herbs and spices to one’s own taste.

Remember that you can also bake the fish sticks for a lighter version. In that case, preheat the oven to 200 °C, arrange the sticks on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, and cook for about 15-20 minutes or until they are golden and crispy, turning them halfway through cooking.
